This past weekend was hands down the best weekend of my entire life! After heading to NYC for what I thought was just a celebration birthday weekend for Erik, it turned out to be an elaborate, very well thought out plan he had been working on for months…our ENGAGEMENT!
How It Happened:
Erik and I flew up to New York late on Friday, May 10th. After arriving in Manhattan well past midnight, we headed to my family’s apartment on the Upper East side and did the quintessential New Yorker thing….ordered Chinese food delivery.
We/(I) slept in the next morning until about 10:00 a.m. (I later found out that while I thought Erik was also sleeping, he had been up since 6 a.m. putting the final touches on my big surprise!). After I woke up, Erik suggested that we go to our favorite breakfast spot – Sarabeth’s in Central Park. Nothing fishy here – we always eat at Sarabeth’s, however when Erik put on his favorite navy suit, I just knew something was up. I asked him what he wanted me to wear, and he picked out my fancy gold dress – at this point I had a fit because who wears a suit and dress to breakfast?! I begged him to leave his jacket at home, but he insisted on bringing it – - and refused to put it on…hmmm…
In my head I knew something was up, but didn’t think that it would actually be happening on Saturday morning, so I just went along. I developed this crazy plan in my head that all the people in Sarabeth’s would think that we were going to a wedding later in the day, thus why we were dressed so fancy!
After breakfast at Sarabeth’s, Erik told me that we were going to see an art exhibit at The Plaza hotel around the corner. He FINALLY put his suit jacket on, and I kept my cool as we took the short walk from Sarabeth’s over to The Plaza. Once we walked in, Erik shook hands and basically hugged the extremely overly excited maitre d’ and he then walked us upstairs to the Rose Room which overlooks the Champagne Lounge.
As soon as we sat down (I didn’t even have time to take off my jacket!), Erik started talking. I stopped him and said “WAIT! Shouldn’t we order a drink first?!” He was shocked and looked around and then I said “OK, never mind – keep going, keep going!” After a beautiful speech about how much he loves me and wants to spend the rest of his life with me, Erik got down on one knee and asked! “YES! Of Course!” I said!
In true Erik fashion, he thought of absolutely everything – and had both our parents waiting nearby and an incredible photographer (also his long time good friend, Cary) capturing every single moment.
Many more pictures to come from Cary Smith of CSM photography – but here is a little sneak preview!
Absolutely, the best weekend of our lives. We are so grateful to be able to share it with our friends, family and all of you! Much, much more to come, including more pics from our fairytale engagement weekend at The Plaza…stay tuned!
Also, a very happy birthday today to my fiance – I love you babe!
xo,
Amanda
